ELMIRA — A 22-year-old man was arrested on felony weapon and stolen property charges following a traffic stop in the city, the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office announced.
On Feb. 19 at about 8:46 p.m., deputies stopped a vehicle on West Water Street for New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law violations.
During the stop, the driver and passenger were removed from the vehicle as part of the investigation.
Shortly after exiting the vehicle, the passenger, De-Quez L. Barnes, allegedly pulled away from deputies and fled on foot.
Deputies pursued Barnes and apprehended him a short distance away.
Authorities said Barnes was found in possession of a loaded .45-caliber handgun that had been reported stolen.
The sheriff’s Criminal Investigation Division assisted in the investigation and subsequent arrest.
Barnes was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a Class C felony, and fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a Class E felony.
He was arraigned in Elmira City Court and remanded to the Chemung County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail or a $100,000 property bond.
Barnes is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
