BEACON — Beacon police arrested a suspect in a stabbing that occurred early Monday on Main Street.
At 7:15 a.m., officers approached a man sitting in a vehicle in the parking lot of police headquarters.
The man was bleeding and told officers he had been stabbed near Fishkill Avenue and Main Street a few minutes earlier.
Through an investigation that included the department’s FLOCK license plate reader system, police identified a suspect vehicle.
Officers found the vehicle unoccupied at the Tompkins Terrace apartments and later located the suspect, Melvin A. Grant Jr., 26, of Beacon.
He was taken into custody.
Detectives obtained a search warrant for Grant’s residence, where they located the weapon used in the stabbing and the clothing he allegedly wore during the attack.
The items were taken as evidence.
Grant was arraigned in Beacon City Court on charges of second-degree assault, a felony, and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a misdemeanor.
He was remanded to the Dutchess County Justice and Transition Center.
The victim was transported to a hospital in stable condition.
