Traffic stop in Chicopee leads to narcotics arrest after pursuit

1 min read

CHICOPEE — A traffic violation on Monday, Feb. 10, around 2:45 p.m. led to the arrest of a local man on multiple charges, including narcotics possession and resisting arrest.

Detectives from the Chicopee Police Department were monitoring traffic on Broadway Street when they observed a red motor vehicle driven by Kashmin Harmon, 33, of Chicopee, whose license was known to be suspended.

Detectives attempted to stop the vehicle, but Harmon sped away, initiating a pursuit.

The chase continued into Springfield, where it was called off due to heavy traffic, erratic driving, and multiple traffic violations, including running red lights.

Shortly after, detectives spotted the vehicle again on Springfield Street, driving at a high rate of speed and running another red light at the intersection of Springfield Street and Fairview Avenue.

Harmon attempted to evade police by making several turns in the city center.

Detectives later observed him entering a Shell gas station at the corner of West Street and Center Street.

When officers attempted to arrest him, Harmon became combative, resulting in a struggle that required four officers to subdue and handcuff him.

Using the department’s real-time crime center, officers located Harmon’s vehicle parked on Dublin Street.

An inventory search of the vehicle revealed 50 doses of suspected fentanyl on the driver’s side floorboard.

During the booking process, Lt. Fopp discovered an additional 50 packets of suspected heroin/fentanyl and two baggies containing a white powdery substance consistent with cocaine.

Harmon was charged with possession of heroin (subsequent offense), resisting arrest (four counts), assault and battery on a police officer (three counts), unsafe operation of a motor vehicle, operating with a suspended license, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for police, speeding, and trafficking in 18 grams or more of cocaine.

He is currently in custody awaiting arraignment.
