CONCORD — A Massachusetts man was taken into custody early Thursday after assaulting two New Hampshire State Police troopers on Interstate 93.

At approximately 12:30 a.m. today, Feb. 13, New Hampshire State Police dispatch received reports of a potentially disabled vehicle pulled to the left side of I-93 northbound in Concord with no lights on.

Trooper Peter Kosakowski responded to the scene and attempted to speak with the driver of a stalled 2011 Honda Civic, later identified as Mugil Malai, 28, of Westford, Massachusetts.

Malai, whose driver’s side door had been open, immediately closed and locked the door.

He attempted but failed to start the vehicle before exiting and charging at Trooper Kosakowski, striking him in the head.

Trooper Morgan Butcher, who had arrived to assist, was also struck by Malai.

After a brief struggle, the troopers subdued Malai and took him into custody.

He was transported to the Merrimack County Jail, where he was held on preventative detention pending an arraignment in Concord District Court.

Malai faces charges of assault on a police officer and resisting arrest.

Troopers Kosakowski and Butcher were treated for minor injuries at Concord Hospital and later released.
