FALL RIVER — The Fall River Police Department is warning residents of a phone scam where callers claim to be law enforcement officials and demand payment to avoid arrest for alleged outstanding warrants.
According to the department, the scammers tell potential victims that they must either surrender themselves to the police for arrest or pay a fine to resolve the warrant.
The scammers provide instructions on how to submit payment, usually through an “eGift” cash card or similar method to a specified account or name.
The scam appears to be “spoofing” phone numbers to make it seem like the calls are coming from the Fall River Police Department.
However, the department emphasizes that they are not currently calling individuals about outstanding warrants and will never ask for payment over the phone or offer to negotiate reduced payments in lieu of arrest.
Residents are advised to be cautious of unsolicited calls demanding payment and to contact the Fall River Police Department directly if they have concerns about the legitimacy of any such calls.
