ST. JOHNSBURY — A 24-year-old local man was arrested on charges of counterfeiting after allegedly passing a fake $100 bill at the St. Johnsbury Country Store, police said.
Jack Sherwyn, of St. Johnsbury, was identified by police as the suspect who used the counterfeit currency at the store located at 537 Railroad Street.
The incident was initially reported on Jan. 29 after the store received the counterfeit bill and reviewed surveillance footage capturing the transaction.
Sherwyn visited the St. Johnsbury Police Department on Jan. 30 after recognizing himself in a Facebook post about the incident and intended to explain how he came into possession of the counterfeit money.
However, he left the premises before he could speak with an officer.
At approximately 11:28 a.m., Officer Hendry located Sherwyn on Railroad Street and proceeded to arrest him.
He was transported to the police department, where he was processed and subsequently released on a citation.
Sherwyn is scheduled to be arraigned at the Caledonia Superior Court on March 10 at 8:30 a.m. Court records indicate that he will face legal action, although he has not been lodged in jail and no bail has been set.
