NEW BEDFORD — Two men were apprehended Thursday evening following a suspected drug transaction on Church Street, according to the City of New Bedford Police Department.

At approximately 8 p.m. on Jan. 23, detectives observed a meeting between Andy Coakley, 37, a known drug dealer residing at 293 Hawthorn Street, and Kenneth Medeiros, 45.

The officers intervened suspecting a narcotics deal was underway.

Upon stopping the men, Coakley was found in possession of multiple drugs, including 104.2 grams of cocaine across three plastic bags, 57 grams plus an additional 11.5 grams of fentanyl, and $5,758 in cash suspected to be drug proceeds.

Medeiros was caught with 6.8 grams of Adderall and 4.9 grams of a substance believed to be cocaine.

Coakley, who has an extensive criminal record with 31 adult arraignments including two convictions related to cocaine and marijuana dealing, faces charges for distribution and trafficking of cocaine and fentanyl, conspiracy to violate drug law, and resisting arrest.

Notably, 26 of his prior arraignments were dismissed.

Medeiros was charged with possession of the controlled substances found on him.

Chief Paul Oliveira expressed frustration at the recurring cycle of arrest and release for known offenders, commending the detectives for their unwavering commitment to public safety.

The operation led to the arrests was conducted by Det. Nathaniel Almeida.

The department is encouraging anyone with further information to contact them anonymously at 508-99-CRIME or to submit a tip through their website.
