HAVERHILL — The Haverhill Police Department issued an advisory today warning residents about a new nationwide scam targeting individuals with a fraudulent bitcoin exchange scheme.
According to local authorities, several victims in the area have reported the scam, in which perpetrators promise to purchase bitcoin in exchange for the numbers and pins of gift cards.
Once victims provide the scammers with their gift card details, the funds are quickly stolen.
Officials emphasized that legitimate businesses and services do not request payment or compensation via gift cards.
The police are urging the public to remain vigilant and to report any occurrences of this or similar scams to the Haverhill Police Department or their local law enforcement agencies.
