FBI: German national in fatal Border Patrol shooting had valid visa

NEWPORT — Newly released details regarding the fatal shooting of U.S. Border Patrol Agent David “Chris” Maland on Interstate 91 confirm the suspect who died in the incident was not in the country illegally, but rather a German national lawfully present in the United States on a current visa.

The shooting occurred around 3:15 p.m. Monday near mile marker 168, when Agent Maland, a 13-year veteran of the Border Patrol and a U.S. Air Force veteran, initiated a traffic stop. An exchange of gunfire followed, leaving Maland and one suspect dead. Another individual was injured and remains hospitalized.

The FBI’s Albany Field Office, which is leading the investigation, has yet to publicly identify the deceased suspect. However, federal officials say the person had valid documentation to be in the country, contradicting any speculation that the incident involved an undocumented immigrant.

In a statement, FBI Albany noted that teams remain in the area gathering evidence and following leads. Authorities have so far offered few details about a possible motive. Investigators stressed that no ongoing public threat exists and that they are working closely with local, state, and federal agencies.

The investigation is still “extremely active,” according to the FBI, which says no further information will be released at this time.
