SHREWSBURY — Law enforcement agencies across the United States launched a coordinated effort Monday to improve safety and reduce crashes on U.S. Route 20, the nation’s longest highway.
The “Highway 20 Speed Enforcement Initiative” involves extra officers conducting speed enforcement on six selected days throughout 2025 along the 3,365-mile route stretching from Boston to Newport, Oregon.
Shrewsbury Police Department participated in the first day of the initiative on Jan. 15, assigning an officer to speed enforcement for a four-hour period.
In 2024, Shrewsbury police responded to 203 crashes on Route 20, locally known as Hartford Turnpike, including 40 with reported injuries.
Officers conducted 947 motor vehicle stops on the road last year for various infractions.
“We encourage everyone to please drive safely and stay alert,” the department said in a statement.
The initiative spans 12 states along Route 20’s path.
