South Portland police investigate Westbrook Street shooting

SOUTH PORTLAND — At approximately 4 p.m. today, South Portland Police Officers were dispatched to a reported shooting at 616 Westbrook Street.

On arrival, they discovered a 30-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his lower leg.

Officers quickly applied a tourniquet, and the victim was taken to Maine Medical Center by South Portland Rescue with serious, but non-life-threatening, injuries.

He is currently in surgery and expected to survive.

John Williams, 41, the stepbrother of the injured man, has been arrested in connection with the shooting.

Williams faces charges including Elevated Aggravated Assault class A, Reckless Conduct class C, and Assault class D.

He has been taken to Cumberland County Jail for processing.

Authorities have described the shooting as an isolated incident, stating that the suspect and victim were known to each other, and affirming that there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The investigation into the shooting remains active.
