Waterbury, CT man dies after house fire, police investigate possible explosion

WATERBURY — A 56-year-old man has died following a fire at his Waterbury home on Horseshoe Drive, police said.

The Waterbury Police Department and the Waterbury Fire Department responded to the blaze at 220 Horseshoe Drive around 5:47 p.m. Sunday.

The man, whose name has not been released, was taken to Saint Mary’s Hospital in critical condition but died early Monday, at 3:30 a.m.

Investigators believe an explosion inside the home may have caused the fire.

The Connecticut State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit is planning a controlled detonation at the site as part of its inquiry.

Officials said there is no ongoing threat to the community.

The investigation is continuing, and authorities said they would provide updates as more information becomes available.
