GROTON — A 17-year-old male has been charged by the Town of Groton Police Department in connection with an October crash that resulted in the death of a 14-year-old boy, Chief L.J. Fusaro Jr. announced Thursday.
The teen faces multiple charges including manslaughter in the second degree with a motor vehicle, misconduct with a motor vehicle, two counts of assault in the first degree, and other traffic-related offenses such as speeding and reckless driving.
The fatal incident occurred early Monday, Oct. 14, when police were called to a serious crash on Fishtown Road around 1:21 a.m. Responding officers found a single vehicle accident with four seriously injured occupants, all of whom were taken to local hospitals.
The 14-year-old passenger later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
Investigations by the Groton Police Patrol and Criminal Investigation Divisions led to an arrest warrant issued for the 17-year-old driver, who was allegedly under the influence with a blood alcohol level exceeding legal limits for a person under 21 and was speeding at the time of the crash.
The juvenile was taken into custody without incident on Jan. 9 and is expected to be arraigned at a later date.
