MONTVILLE — A Montville police officer foiled an attempted burglary early Saturday morning, leading to the arrest of a suspect now facing a slew of charges.
The incident occurred at 1:15 a.m. near the intersection of Rt. 163 and Rt. 82, where the officer was stationed due to recent burglaries targeting area gas stations.
The officer’s attention was drawn to a white SUV that pulled into the parking lot of Renaldi’s gas station and parked off to the side.
Upon exiting his vehicle, the suspect, later identified as Marcus Anton, 40, was seen wearing dark clothing, a hood, and a mask.
The officer observed Anton approaching the store, then lost sight of him briefly.
Backup was called as the officer approached the front of the store, only to find the glass door shattered.
Anton attempted to flee through the broken door to his vehicle when confronted.
A foot chase ensued, and although a taser was deployed, it proved ineffective.
The officer physically apprehended Anton as he tried to enter the SUV.
Resistance continued until other officers arrived to assist with the arrest.
Investigation revealed that the SUV was stolen, fitted with stolen registration plates, and contained burglary tools and stolen items.
The delay in the press release was due to ongoing investigations, and additional charges are anticipated.
Anton is charged with Reckless Endangerment 2nd Degree, two counts of Burglary 3rd Degree, Possession of Burglary Tools, two counts of Criminal Mischief 1st Degree, Larceny of Motor Vehicle, two counts of Larceny 3rd Degree, Criminal Trover, and Interfering with an Officer.
The extensive list of charges reflects the gravity of the crimes and the potential risk to the community.
The Montville Department of Police Services is actively pursuing leads and has indicated that more information will be released as the investigation continues.
