BOSTON — Boston Police Department officers peacefully arrested an armed suspect early Monday after he barricaded himself and took hostages inside a Hyde Park residence.

At around 3:35 a.m., officers from District E-18 responded to reports of an individual with a gun at 19 Hopewell Road.

They found the front door damaged and open, and ballistic evidence near the entrance.

Upon hearing yelling and seeing a gun muzzle on the second floor, officers engaged the suspect, later identified as Andres Rivera, 42, of Boston.

Rivera was holding a shotgun and had another rifle, as well as three hostages in a bedroom.

He fired a round, causing property damage but no injuries to officers.

SWAT and negotiator teams established communication and eventually persuaded Rivera to release the hostages.

After prolonged negotiations, Rivera surrendered and now faces multiple charges, including armed home invasion and assault with a dangerous weapon.

The incident also involved two vehicles shot on Monponset Street, with detectives subsequently recovering firearms and ammunition from Rivera’s residence.

Rivera is scheduled for arraignment in West Roxbury District Court on Tuesday.
