MILTON — A single-vehicle rollover crash on I-89 Southbound near Mile Marker 104 led to the arrest of Wayne M. Butchino, 27, of St. Albans, on multiple charges, including DUI with serious bodily injury, grossly negligent operation, and leaving the scene of an accident.
Vermont State Police responded to the incident on Jan. 4 at about 1:24 p.m. after being notified of the crash.
The passenger, identified as Devron M. Monahan, also 27 and from St. Albans, was found injured and outside the vehicle, while Butchino had reportedly fled the scene on foot.
Monahan was transported to UVM Medical Center with severe injuries from being ejected from the vehicle during the crash.
Butchino was apprehended shortly after in Milton and also taken to UVM Medical Center for minor injuries.
Investigations revealed that Butchino had three active arrest warrants: two from Franklin County for failure to appear in court regarding retail theft and first-degree aggravated domestic assault with a weapon, and one from Chittenden County for failure to appear on a retail theft charge.
While at the hospital, troopers noticed indicators of impairment in Butchino and conducted a DUI investigation.
Following medical clearance, he was arrested on the warrants and taken to the Northwest State Correctional Facility, where he was held without bail for the first-degree aggravated domestic assault warrant.
Butchino was issued citations for the failure to appear warrants and flash cited to appear in Chittenden County Superior Court to face the new charges from the crash incident.
