Mashpee house fire displaces residents, claims pet’s life

MASHPEE — A residential fire at 252 Main St. resulted in no human injuries but the death of a pet dog, officials from the Mashpee Fire Department said Friday night.

Crews responded to an emergency call at 9:05 p.m. and upon arrival, found the home’s rear deck and kitchen consumed by flames.

The residents had evacuated prior to the fire department’s arrival but reported a dog and a cat were missing.

Support from neighboring Cotuit, Sandwich, COMM and Joint Base Fire Departments was enlisted to battle the blaze.

The Mashpee Police Department also provided assistance on scene.

Firefighters managed to contain the fire to the deck and kitchen, but the house suffered extensive smoke and water damage.

The family dog was found during the initial search but did not survive.

The cat was later discovered alive during overhaul operations and reunited with its owners.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
