Man arrested for damaging car, attempted theft in Montpelier

MONTPELIER — A 24-year-old Randolph man was arrested early Wednesday morning after police say he attempted to steal a Ford F-150 Lightning from McGee Ford.

Benjamin Matte was taken into custody around 5:11 a.m. after officers responded to a report of a suspicious person at the dealership.

Police found a smashed window and additional damage to the vehicle, estimated at $2,000.

During questioning, Matte admitted to trying to take the vehicle to go to Burlington.

He was brought to the Montpelier Police Department for processing and later released on a citation.

Matte is scheduled to appear in Vermont Superior Court on Feb. 13 at 8:30 a.m. to face felony unlawful mischief and attempted vehicle operation without owner’s consent charges.

No further information has been released.
