SPRINGFIELD — Two teenagers, aged 13 and 14, were arrested Thursday evening after the Springfield Police Department’s Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU) seized two loaded firearms on Main Street.
Following a weeks-long investigation into a 13-year-old male suspected of possessing an illegal firearm, FIU detectives acted on a tip received on Jan. 2 that the juvenile, who had an active arrest warrant, was carrying a gun.
Surveillance operations led detectives to the suspect and two others on the 600 block of Main Street.
Detectives witnessed one of the individuals, later identified as a 14-year-old male, remove a firearm from his jacket pocket.
At around 5:45 p.m., as the trio entered a parking lot, detectives attempted to apprehend them.
The 13-year-old fled, discarding a firearm over a fence before being taken into custody.
The discarded firearm was later found on Niagara Street.
The second armed suspect fled on foot but was apprehended on the Dwight Street Extension, with the firearm being located on Adams Street.
Both suspects are being held, and due to their juvenile status, their names, photographs, and specific charges have not been disclosed.
