Lynn residents warned of phone scam posing as bank’s fraud department

1 min read

LYNN — The Lynn Police Department has alerted the public about a phone scam targeting bank customers in the area, with fraudsters posing as bank representatives from the fraud department.

According to authorities, scammers are contacting individuals claiming to be from their bank’s fraud department.

The calls appear legitimate, with caller ID seeming to show the actual bank’s number.

Potential victims are informed that their credit or debit card has been compromised.

The scammers then recite the first seven and the last four digits of the customer’s real card number, asking the customers to provide the missing numbers to resolve the issue.

The police department emphasized that sharing the requested information would allow the scammer to gain access to the full card number and conduct fraudulent transactions.

They also noted that legitimate banks already have the full card number as they are the ones who issued the card and would not ask for such information over the phone.

The Lynn Police Department is urging residents to hang up immediately if they receive a call of this nature.

They advise anyone who receives such unsolicited calls to not provide any account or card information and to instead contact their bank directly through the main customer service or fraud department phone number to verify the legitimacy of the call.
