Two injured in head-on collision near Cranston prison

CRANSTON — A head-on collision on Pontiac Ave near the Maximum Security Prison on Jan. 1 left two people injured, police said.

At approximately 7:20 p.m., Cranston Police Department officers were called to the scene where a northbound Toyota Corolla had crossed into oncoming traffic and crashed into a southbound GMC Yukon.

The female driver of the Corolla, who was not wearing a seatbelt, suffered severe head trauma and was found unconscious.

She was quickly transported to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment.

The male driver of the Yukon sustained minor injuries in the accident.

Both vehicles involved in the crash suffered significant damage to their front ends, indicating the force of the collision.

The CPD Traffic Unit is investigating the cause of the accident.

Further details about the drivers’ conditions or the investigation have not been released at this time.
