SHREWSBURY — A juvenile was arrested Wednesday evening after fleeing a motor vehicle stop and being found with a loaded handgun, according to the Shrewsbury Police Department.
At approximately 5:59 p.m., Officer Belgou initiated a traffic stop on a 2000 Toyota Corolla on Harrington Avenue near the intersection with Muzzy Ave, due to a traffic violation.
While the car was coming to a stop, one of the rear passengers exited the vehicle and ran, clutching a black object suspected to be a firearm.
A second passenger attempted to escape but was detained by Officer Belgou along with the driver and another passenger.
Backup officers responded, deploying the police department’s drone unit and requesting K-9 assistance from neighboring towns, including Auburn, Charlton, Milford, Uxbridge, and Southbridge.
The fleeing suspect, a 17-year-old male, was located by Sergeant Caviston and Officer Wnek hiding in the parking lot of Quinn Apartments.
He was taken into custody without incident, though the black object was not on his person.
A search conducted by the K-9 units resulted in the discovery of a loaded black Sig Sauer P2022, .40 caliber handgun with seven hollow-point rounds in nearby bushes, and the suspect’s sweatshirt was found beneath a vehicle.
The juvenile was charged with carrying a loaded firearm without a license and possession of a large capacity firearm/magazine without a license.
The other three individuals in the car were issued civil citations and released.
