LOWELL — Authorities have charged Bravindah Mawanda, 20, with the fatal shooting of Nikhl Israni, 24, both of Lowell, following an incident last night, according to Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Lowell Police Superintendent Greg Hudon.
Police were called to the intersection of Middlesex and Maude Streets shortly before 8 p.m. on Dec. 31 after reports of a person down in the roadway.
On arrival, officers found Israni with multiple gunshot wounds.
He was quickly transported to Lowell General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The initial investigation indicates that the shooting occurred inside Israni’s car, where Mawanda allegedly shot him several times before fleeing to his nearby home.
Police later identified Mawanda as the suspect and recovered a firearm at his residence that matches the wounds inflicted on Israni.
Mawanda is scheduled for arraignment this morning in Lowell District Court.
The ongoing investigation involves Lowell Police, the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, and Massachusetts State Police Detectives from the District Attorney’s Office, with Assistant District Attorneys Christopher Tarrant and Jake McCrindle prosecuting the case.
