ST. JOHNSBURY — Vermont State Police interviewed a St. Johnsbury Police Department captain on Monday as part of their ongoing investigation into a shooting that took place earlier this month.

Capt. Jason Gray, who was seriously injured in the Dec. 13 incident, was interviewed by detectives as he continues to recover.

Evidence has shown that Gray discharged his duty weapon during the confrontation at a Portland Street apartment, where he was shot by Scott Mason.

In line with standard procedures for investigations involving police shootings, the Vermont State Police will hand over their findings to the Vermont Attorney General’s Office and an appointed State’s Attorney’s Office for independent evaluations of the use of force by Capt. Gray.

Due to a conflict of interest, the Caledonia County State’s Attorney’s Office, which is prosecuting Mason, has stepped aside.

The Windham County State’s Attorney’s Office will instead review the officer-involved shooting.

The state police confirmed that Capt. Gray is fully cooperating with investigators.

No additional information has been made available at this time.
