FALL RIVER — A Fall River man was apprehended Sunday following a community-assisted police operation that thwarted a potentially dangerous situation.

Neftaly Arroyo-Gomez, 25, is now in police custody after a tense chase in the city’s residential area.

The Fall River Police Department Patrol Bureau responded to a call at around 10 a.m. on Sunday, reporting a masked individual armed with a pistol on the 100 block of Stafford Road.

Upon arrival, officers began a search operation.

The suspect, later identified as Arroyo-Gomez, was spotted and fled on foot, leading to a pursuit through neighborhood backyards.

A daring intervention by a Cambridge Street resident ultimately led to the suspect’s arrest.

Arroyo-Gomez was found in possession of a loaded Glock handgun equipped with an illegal switch device, which converted the pistol into a fully automatic firearm, thus classifying it as a machine gun under federal law.

The Fall River Police Department expressed profound thanks to the community members who promptly reported the incident and assisted in the subsequent arrest.

Notably, the department recognized the bravery of the individual who subdued Arroyo-Gomez and those who helped locate the discarded firearm, which was crucial in preventing further danger and ensuring the safety of the community.

This incident highlights the significance of community-police partnerships in maintaining public safety.

The department extended its gratitude for the support and vigilance of the citizens involved.
