BOSTON — Police officers with the Boston Police Department’s Youth Violence Strike Force arrested a 22-year-old man on Wednesday afternoon for carrying a machine gun and possessing drugs, potentially preventing a violent retaliation in Dorchester.

At 1:51 p.m., after receiving intelligence about a possible violent incident following an assault earlier that day, officers patrolling the area noticed Elijah Carvalho of Cambridge, MA, with a suspicious bulge under his clothing near Lawrence Avenue.

Upon approach and a subsequent pat-frisk, officers recovered a 9mm Glock 19 Gen 3 with a machine gun conversion device, also known as a “switch.” The firearm had a live round in the chamber, an extended magazine with 15 rounds, and obliterated serial numbers.

During the booking process at District B-2, officers also found six pills believed to be Oxycodone on Carvalho.

Carvalho faces several charges, including unlawful possession of a firearm, machine gun, ammunition, and a large capacity feeding device, carrying a loaded machine gun, and possession of Class A drugs.

His arraignment is set for Roxbury District Court.
