TOWNSHEND — A Windham County Sheriff’s Office cruiser rolled over early Saturday morning after sliding on black ice, officials reported.

The incident occurred at approximately 4:25 a.m. when Deputy Thomas Bessette, operating a 2019 Ford Interceptor SUV, lost control of the vehicle on Route 30 near Stephenson Curve.

The cruiser struck a phone pole and descended a steep embankment before overturning.

Rescue personnel from Townshend Fire and Rescue Inc. responded to the scene, along with Green Mountain Power and Scott Brooks Towing.

Bessette was transported to Grace Cottage Hospital, where he received treatment for minor injuries and was subsequently released.

The Vermont State Police have taken over the investigation into the crash to determine the exact cause, although preliminary assessments point to black ice as a contributing factor.

Further details will be provided as the investigation progresses.
