HINGHAM — A Weymouth man was arrested Monday morning after he allegedly broke into a Hingham home and stole a car, according to Hingham Police Department Public Information Officer Lt. Steven Dearth.
At 10:39 a.m. on Dec. 23, officers responded to a burglar alarm at a residence on Lazell St. Upon arrival, they discovered the garage doors open, several packages opened outside, and the rear doors to the home broken.
The homeowner, communicating through the home security system, reported that a white Mercedes was missing from the garage.
As officers were on the scene, the stolen Mercedes returned to the driveway.
The driver, upon noticing the police presence, quickly reversed and fled at high speed.
A pedestrian later flagged down an officer to report seeing the white sports car speeding toward Wompatuck State Park, located approximately half a mile from the burglarized home.
Police located the stolen vehicle and the suspect, identified as 26-year-old Cole J.
McCarthy of South Weymouth, in a parking lot at Wompatuck State Park.
McCarthy was arrested without incident following several commands from the officers.
An open beer container and two plastic bags containing a substance believed to be cocaine were found in his possession.
McCarthy faces multiple charges, including larceny of a motor vehicle, breaking and entering daytime for a felony, possession of a Class B substance, driving with a suspended license (subsequent offense), and having an open container of alcohol in a vehicle.
Following his booking, McCarthy was arraigned on the same day at Hingham District Court and was ordered held on $2,500 cash bail.
