GRAFTON — A residential fire in Grafton was swiftly contained by local fire crews on Christmas Eve, officials said.

The Grafton Fire Department was dispatched to a home at 12 Stonewall Drive at 12:06 p.m. after reports of smoke in the attic.

Under the command of Fire Chief Eric Mathieu, a team of 26 firefighters arrived with significant resources, including three engines, a tower ladder, a heavy rescue vehicle, a tanker, two command vehicles, and a specialty unit.

The crews found a small smoldering fire upon their arrival and quickly extinguished the flames, preventing the spread beyond the attic and adjacent rooms.

The fire was under control within half an hour, but personnel remained on-site until 2:19 p.m. to check for any further fire spread and to overhaul the area.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by both the Grafton Police and Fire Departments.

No injuries were reported to either firefighters or civilians.

The Grafton Police Department provided traffic control during the incident and an officer to assist with the investigation.

The affected building has been deemed uninhabitable, with the electrical power shut off due to the damage.

The Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents.

The Grafton Fire Department extended its gratitude to neighboring fire departments from Millbury, Northbridge, and Westborough for covering their stations during the incident.

Acknowledgements were also given to the Grafton Police, Grafton Emergency Communications, MedStar EMS, Grafton Highway Department, Grafton Building Department, and National Grid Electric for their support in responding to the emergency.
