COLCHESTER — A traffic stop on Main Street turned into a high-speed chase on Christmas Day, leading to the arrest of a Burlington man, police said.

At about 2:07 p.m., a Colchester Police officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation.

The driver, later identified as Peter Smith II, 57, engaged in a short conversation before fleeing at a high rate of speed, ignoring the officer’s lights and siren.

The pursuit was terminated near Main Street and East Road for safety reasons.

Officers later found Smith walking on Depot Road.

Despite initial resistance, he was apprehended and taken into custody.

Smith refused to reveal his identity but was eventually identified through further investigation.

Smith is being held at the Northwest State Correctional Facility, facing charges including eluding a police officer, negligent operation, providing false information to a police officer, excessive speed, and driving with a criminally suspended license.

The Colchester Police Department received assistance from the Milton Police in the incident.
