Portland fire claims life, Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office investigates

PORTLAND — A fire in a residential basement on Bayview Drive led to the death of a man Sunday afternoon, prompting an investigation by the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office.

The Portland Police Department and local firefighters responded to the blaze at 34 Bayview Drive around 3:22 p.m., where they discovered the body of Lester York, 78.

The cause of the fire, which burned contents but did not damage the structure of the home, remains under investigation.

York’s body was taken to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Officials from the Fire Marshal’s Office are working with the Portland Fire Department to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
