Suspicious fire destroys Monkton home, investigation underway

MONKTON — A suspicious fire destroyed a home on Tyler Bridge Road late Sunday night, prompting an investigation by state and local authorities.

The Monkton Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire at 1237 Tyler Bridge Road at 11:27 p.m. on Dec. 15.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the building fully engulfed in flames.

Fire Chief Curtis Layn said crews were limited to an exterior attack due to concerns about the structure’s stability.

Despite their efforts, the home could not be saved.

The Addison County Fire Investigation Team was called to the scene, and investigators deemed the fire suspicious.

The Vermont Department of Public Safety Fire & Explosion Investigation Unit was subsequently contacted to assist in determining the origin and cause of the blaze.

Authorities have not released information about the homeowner or whether the property was occupied at the time of the fire.

Det. Sgt. James Wright of the New Haven Barracks is leading the ongoing investigation.

The VATAP is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest in connection with the fire.
