NEW BEDFORD — Police arrested a man Tuesday evening in connection with an early morning shooting at a local fast-food restaurant that left one person injured.

Pedro Javier Gonzalez Olmo, 31, of New Bedford, was taken into custody without incident following the shooting at a Taco Bell on Coggeshall Street, police said.

Officers responded to reports of shots fired at the restaurant shortly before 1 a.m. Tuesday.

They found an adult male victim with non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect had fled the scene.

Investigators determined that an argument between two female customers and the suspect escalated into a physical altercation inside the restaurant.

The suspect then left the building.

As the victim was entering the restaurant from a nearby vehicle, he encountered the suspect outside.

After an exchange of words, the suspect allegedly shot the victim.

Olmo, a licensed gun owner, faces charges including assault and battery, assault by means of a firearm, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, and improper storage.

Detective Mohammad Mir made the arrest.

Police seized Olmo’s weapons.

Authorities are asking anyone with information to call 508-99-CRIME or submit an anonymous tip on the police department’s website.
