Suspect arrested in shooting of St. Johnsbury police officer

ST. JOHNSBURY — Vermont State Police arrested 38-year-old Scott Mason on Sunday in connection with the shooting of St. Johnsbury Police Department Capt. Jason Gray.

Mason was apprehended around 2 a.m. inside a Portland Street residence, adjacent to where Gray was seriously injured in the line of duty on Friday afternoon.

Following a midnight issuance of a search warrant for the address, law enforcement officials, including the state police’s specialized units, local police, and other assisting agencies, executed the warrant.

After processing at the St. Johnsbury state police barracks, Mason faces charges of attempted second-degree murder and aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer, among other unrelated charges.

He will be transported to jail per the arrest warrant.

The Vermont State Police extended gratitude to all assisting agencies, municipal officials, and the public for assistance and patience throughout the investigation.
