FALMOUTH — A Windham man was charged with Operating Under the Influence (OUI) after driving the wrong way on I-95 and causing a head-on collision, state police reported.
The incident occurred on the evening of Dec. 14 when Maine State Police were alerted to a vehicle traveling northbound in the southbound lanes near mile marker 53 on the Maine Turnpike.
The wrong-way driver, identified as 30-year-old Stephan Adams, collided with a southbound vehicle operated by a pregnant woman.
Both drivers sustained minor injuries.
The pregnant driver and her passenger were taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland by Cumberland Fire and Rescue as a precaution.
Adams, who was driving a black 2017 Toyota Rav-4, was treated for his injuries at the scene before also being transported to Maine Medical Center.
During the investigation, officers determined Adams was impaired and charged him with OUI and Driving to Endanger.
The southbound lanes of I-95 were closed temporarily as authorities dealt with the aftermath of the crash.
Traffic was diverted, causing minor delays.
The turnpike has since been reopened.
State Police continue to investigate the incident and urge drivers to remain vigilant and report any suspected impaired drivers.
