GLOUCESTER — Fire and police units responded to a two-alarm blaze at 3 Pirmi Lane late Saturday night, executing multiple rescues and suffering injuries in the process.

The Gloucester Fire and Police Departments were dispatched at about 10:22 p.m. on Dec. 14, where they found heavy flames on the second floor of a multi-unit building.

The response escalated to a second alarm, summoning additional resources.

Firefighters, with the Gloucester Police Department’s aid, performed five rescues using ground ladders.

One victim was taken to Beverly Hospital and another to Addison Gilbert Hospital, while a third sought medical attention independently.

Three police officers also required treatment for smoke inhalation.

Police Chief Edward Conley applauded the courageous actions of the officers and responders, expressing hope for a speedy recovery for all involved.

Fire Chief Eric Smith emphasized the importance of the rescues in preventing potential fatalities but noted the temporary displacement of several families due to the building’s closure.

Though the main fire has been subdued, crews remain on-site managing overhaul operations to eliminate any remaining hot spots.

Chief Smith extended gratitude to mutual aid partners from Essex, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Rockport, and Ipswich Fire Departments for their assistance on-scene, and to Danvers, Beverly, and Hamilton Fire Departments for providing station coverage.

State Police from the State Fire Marshal’s Office has joined the investigation to determine the fire’s cause.

As the inquiry continues, no additional details are presently available.
