Manhunt underway for suspect in St. Johnsbury officer shooting

ST. JOHNSBURY — Vermont State Police and allied agencies are intensifying their search for Scott Mason, 38, of St. Johnsbury, following the shooting of a local police officer on Friday afternoon.

Mason is considered armed and dangerous, and a Blue Alert has been issued statewide and across New England, urging the public to remain vigilant.

The alert is a tool activated when an officer has been injured or killed and the suspect is still at large.

Authorities encourage residents to secure their homes and vehicles and to maintain awareness of their surroundings.

The public is advised not to approach Mason if spotted but to call 911 immediately.

VSP has released an additional photo of Mason to assist in his capture.

People can submit anonymous tips through various channels, including texting VTIPS to 274637, calling 844-84-VTIPS, or visiting the online tip site.

Mason has an outstanding arrest warrant for failing to appear on 26 counts of forgery, unrelated to the recent shooting.

The warrant applies throughout New England and New York, with a bail set at $5,000.

The injured officer, whose identity has not been disclosed, is currently receiving treatment at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.

As of Friday night, he was in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

Road closures in the vicinity of the shooting have been lifted, but residents can expect a continued heightened police presence as the investigation proceeds.

The state police will provide ongoing updates on the case as it develops.
