Suspect arrested in Holyoke homicide case

HOLYOKE — A suspect has been taken into custody in connection with a homicide that occurred in Holyoke on July 9.

The juvenile suspect, whose identity is protected due to their age, was arrested on an active murder warrant on Wednesday, Dec. 11, by the Massachusetts State Police Hampden County Detective Unit, SAFE Task Force, Massachusetts State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section, and members of the Holyoke Police Department.

Authorities were called to the 50 block of West Street in Holyoke on the night of July 9, after a shot spotter activation at 11:22 p.m. Upon arrival, officers found an adult male with a gunshot wound.

The victim, later identified as 38-year-old Dexter Ortiz of Holyoke, was transported to Baystate Medical Center along with two others who sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Ortiz succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.

The investigation is active and ongoing, conducted by the Holyoke Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Hampden District Attorney’s Office, and the Hampden District Attorney’s Office’s Murder Unit.
