EAST PROVIDENCE — A local man has been arrested and charged with assault following an altercation on a school bus in November.

Robert McCoart, 39, of East Providence, turned himself in to police on Nov. 27 after several days of attempts by authorities to locate him.

The arrest stems from an incident that occurred on a school bus in late November where McCoart is alleged to have physically assaulted the bus driver, used racial slurs, and threatened the driver and his family.

McCoart is facing charges of simple assault and battery and disorderly conduct.

After his surrender to police, he was arraigned at Sixth District Court.

The East Providence Police Department emphasized the seriousness of the offense, stating that such behavior will not be tolerated within the community.

The department reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and dignity of all individuals, highlighting the importance of community standards and the rule of law.
