Pedestrian dies after being struck by vehicle in Chicopee

CHICOPEE — A 72-year-old man died Sunday from injuries sustained after being hit by a car on Nov. 23 while crossing Granby Road, according to the Chicopee Police Department.

The incident occurred shortly after the man had exited the Dollar Tree store and was making his way home to his residence at 1246 Granby Rd.

The vehicle, which was traveling west on Granby Rd, struck the pedestrian.

The driver stopped immediately to call 911 and provided aid to the man until emergency services arrived.

The victim was taken to the hospital and placed in the intensive care unit, where he was treated for serious injuries until his passing.

Police have reported that the driver of the vehicle is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.

Following the tragic event, Chicopee Police issued a statement expressing their condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and emphasized the need for safety awareness among both drivers and pedestrians.

They urged pedestrians to wear reflective clothing at night, carry a flashlight, and remain vigilant, reminding them that being visible to drivers is crucial.

Additionally, motorists are advised to stay alert, watch for pedestrians, and adhere to speed limits to avoid distractions while driving.

The police department highlighted that distracted driving remains a significant concern within the city, and steps are being taken to address this issue.
