Cromwell residents warned of police impersonation phone scam

1 min read

CROMWELL — The Cromwell Police Department, in partnership with WFSB – Channel 3 Eyewitness News, issued a scam alert Monday after reports of an individual impersonating a police lieutenant and attempting to deceive residents.

According to the police, the scammer contacts residents by phone, claiming to be a lieutenant from the Cromwell Police Department, and informs them they have missed jury duty and that a warrant has been issued for their arrest.

The caller ID appears to show the call originating from the department’s general phone number, 860-635-2256.

The impersonator proceeds to send text messages with fraudulent documents purporting to be an arrest warrant and demands money.

The Cromwell Police Department has clarified that these calls are not coming from their office and that there is no lieutenant on their staff.

They have cautioned the public to disregard any such calls, which they believe to be a form of “spoofing,” a technique used to falsify caller ID information.

Residents are urged not to provide any personal or financial information over the phone and to verify any questionable communication by directly contacting the Cromwell Police Department.

Those who have received similar calls are encouraged to report the incidents to the Cromwell Police Department at 860-635-2256 to help prevent further scams.
