BROOKLINE — Police and fire crews were dispatched to the Muddy River near the Longwood MBTA station at approximately 12:05 p.m. today after receiving reports of a possible oil leak affecting the waterway, which runs between Boston and Brookline.
Upon arrival, authorities confirmed that a leak had occurred, impacting the local wildlife.
The Boston Fire Department was also called to the scene as the spill extended to both sides of the river.
The specific source and nature of the leak have yet to be determined.
The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and Clean Harbors are currently on site assessing the situation and developing a plan for containment and cleanup.
New England Wildlife has stepped in to assist with the affected animals, having already transported eight geese and ducks for treatment at their facility.
It remains uncertain if more wildlife will require rescue.
Concerned community members have expressed a desire to assist with the efforts, but due to safety protocols, only individuals with proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and training have been permitted to participate in the cleanup.
The investigation into the cause of the leak is ongoing, with further updates expected to be released from Town Hall tomorrow.
