SOUTHINGTON — The Southington Police Department is alerting the public of a scam involving a fraudulent caller impersonating one of their officers, according to a recent statement.
Residents have reported receiving calls from someone claiming to be “Officer Canty” from the Southington Police Department.
The caller, who primarily uses the phone number (860) 419-0567, tells residents they have missed a court date and attempts to solicit personal information.
Authorities advise that anyone who receives such a call should not provide any information and hang up immediately.
The Southington Police Department has confirmed there is no Officer Canty on their force and that the calls are not legitimate.
Residents who have been contacted by the fake officer or have concerns about similar calls are encouraged to reach out directly to the Southington Police Department at (860) 621-0101 to speak with a real officer.
The police department is investigating the complaints and urges the community to remain vigilant against this type of phone fraud.
They remind the public that law enforcement officials will not ask for personal information or threaten citizens over the phone regarding missed court dates.
