HOLLISTON — The Holliston Police Department has issued a warning about a new phone scam involving individuals claiming to be HPD detectives as part of an “Intimidation Scamming” scheme.
During the 3-11 shift today, the department received several reports from residents who were contacted by scammers using caller ID spoofing to make it appear as if the calls were coming from the HPD’s official number.
The fake detectives attempted to extract personal information through scare tactics.
The police emphasized that while officers may sometimes ask individuals to confirm their identities to ensure they are speaking with the correct person or referencing the right report, they will never request Social Security numbers over the phone.
Residents who receive a suspicious call purportedly from the HPD are advised to ask for the caller’s name for verification purposes, hang up, and then directly dial the department’s business line at 508-429-1212 to confirm the legitimacy of the call and to speak with the officer or administrator mentioned.
The Holliston Police Department encourages the public to be vigilant and to report any similar incidents to help prevent further scam attempts.
