HINESBURG — A month-long investigation by local police culminated in the arrest of 32-year-old Steven Gabaree on charges of grand larceny, forgery, and other offenses, authorities reported Thursday.
According to the Hinesburg Police Department, the investigation began on Oct. 22 when a business in the town reported issues with payroll checks being double cashed.
Through the analysis of ATM video and banking records, investigators found that Gabaree had cashed seven payroll checks that had already been processed and did not belong to him.
Further inquiry revealed that Gabaree was in possession of a stolen vehicle.
Examination of registration and tax/title forms, along with a bill of sale from the Department of Motor Vehicles, uncovered a forged signature.
These documents, provided by Gabaree, were used to fraudulently transfer and re-register the vehicle in his name.
Gabaree was taken into custody without incident on Dec. 6 at approximately 12:15 p.m. at his residence on Patricia Place.
He was issued a citation to appear in Chittenden County Superior Court, Criminal Division, and was transported to the courthouse to face charges including five counts of forgery and seven counts of false pretenses, among others.
