SALEM — Two men were apprehended Thursday after a reported theft at Home Depot led to a scuffle and a chase involving Salem police.
At about 1:15 p.m., the Salem Police Department responded to a 911 call about a fight at the Home Depot on Main Street.
The suspects had fled in a black Porsche with no plates, but Detective Robert Farah, in the vicinity on unrelated business, spotted the vehicle speeding through a nearby Target parking lot.
Farah followed the Porsche to an apartment complex on Cluff Crossing Road, where patrol units conducted a felony stop and detained Nathan Calabrese, 46, of Hampton, and James Geary, 40, of Methuen, Massachusetts.
The investigation found the duo had taken over $1,000 in merchandise.
An off-duty officer and a civilian tried to detain them, resulting in injuries to all involved before the suspects escaped in their car.
Calabrese, identified as the culprit in a theft the previous day and other incidents in the region, faces multiple charges, including two counts of Class B felony robbery and Class A misdemeanor willful concealment.
Geary has been charged with Class B felony robbery and Class A misdemeanor willful concealment.
Both men are being held without bail and are scheduled for arraignment before Salem District Court.
The Porsche was impounded, and further charges are anticipated as the investigation continues.
