Fair Haven apartment blaze leads to resident’s arrest, officers injured

FAIR HAVEN — A fire broke out in a Main Street apartment Thursday morning, leading to a dramatic rescue and the arrest of the resident on a mental health warrant.

At 7:30 a.m., Fair Haven Police, Granville EMS, Fair Haven Fire and Poultney Fire Department responded to reports of a fire at 87 Main St. First responders observed smoke billowing from a second-story window upon arrival.

Firefighters were forced to break into the apartment where they discovered the resident had attempted to construct a campfire on the stove.

The blaze was quickly extinguished, but the resident had barricaded themselves inside.

Police managed to breach the barricade and restrain the individual, who was then taken into custody.

During the incident, two police officers sustained minor injuries as they were assaulted by the resident while subduing them.

The identities of the officers and the resident have not been released in accordance with police policy regarding such incidents.

Authorities are continuing their investigation, and charges against the resident are pending.
