Child recovered, suspect arrested after vehicle stolen with toddler inside

WILLIMANTIC — A stolen vehicle with a three-year-old child inside at the Valero Gas Station prompted a swift response from Willimantic Police on Dec. 4, resulting in the safe recovery of the child and the arrest of the suspect.

According to the Willimantic Police Department, the Dispatch Center received multiple 911 calls around 4:17 p.m. reporting the incident.

Officers and supporting agencies immediately launched an extensive search for the vehicle to ensure the child’s safety.

The suspect, Haninef Baker, born on Jan. 21, 1996, was located and arrested in Preston.

Baker was charged with second-degree kidnapping, robbery involving an occupied motor vehicle, risk of injury to a minor, first offense larceny of a motor vehicle, and second-degree breach of peace.

Following the arrest, Baker was held on a $250,000 cash/surety bond and was scheduled for presentment at Danielson Superior Court today.

In a press release, the Willimantic Police Department acknowledged the efforts of all involved in the rapid and effective resolution of the incident, including the officers, dispatchers, and cooperating agencies, as well as the community for their support and vigilance.
