RUTLAND — The Rutland Police Department responded to a report of an erratic driver which led to the arrest of a 59-year-old man for operating under the influence Monday evening.
At 7:48 p.m., the dispatch center received a 911 call about a black Ford pickup driving erratically, unable to stay in its lane, stopping in the roadway, and reversing.
Two minutes later, another caller reported that the same vehicle had struck a tree at the intersection of Pommogussett and Campbell.
Rutland Police and Fire Department personnel arrived at the scene to find the driver trapped inside the vehicle.
He sustained minor injuries and was extricated before being placed under arrest.
The man, whose identity has not been released, was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
He is scheduled for arraignment tomorrow on charges of operating under the influence and other traffic offenses.
Authorities praised the quick action of the 911 callers, crediting their efforts with preventing potential harm to other road users.
