Person in crisis safely taken off Piscataqua River Bridge, I-95 reopens

PORTSMOUTH — Interstate 95 was reopened in both directions today after State Troopers successfully assisted a person experiencing a mental health crisis on the Piscataqua River Bridge.

At just after 1 p.m., Dec. 3, troopers from Troop A barracks were dispatched to the southbound lanes of I-95 near mile marker 16 following reports of a single-vehicle accident.

The driver, having left the crash site, was seen in a precarious position on the bridge, sparking concerns for their safety.

The State Police Crisis Negotiation Unit (CNU) arrived swiftly at the scene and engaged the individual in crisis negotiations.

The efforts led to the safe custody of the person, who was subsequently transported to a local hospital for mental health evaluation.

The Portsmouth Police Department and Portsmouth Fire Department provided vital support during the incident, ensuring a coordinated response.

New Hampshire State Police have issued a reminder that support for mental health crises is readily accessible.
